Stunts-Ability is a 501© (3) non-profit
organization that trains amputees and people with disabilities for
stunts, acting, and effects in the film industry and refers
potential candidates to some of the biggest Production companies in
Hollywood, while reaching out to disabled, special education, and
troubled youth. Over the years, Stunts-Ability actors have performed
at over 150 schools, hospitals, and special events. Smith says "We
are not only trying to help the disabled break into the film
industry, but we really want to educate and inspire the public about
persons with disabilities by speaking at events to build solid role
models" In recent years, it has placed over 40 of its people in
movie and television projects; such as Predator 2, Terminator 2,
Artificial Intelli-gence, Baywatch, and Star Trek - First Contact.
Stunts-Ability's newest program, Youth to Responsible Adults
Program (Y.R.A.P.), works with students to show what they can do,
not what they can't do. This hands-on acting/stunt program
helps build confidence, self-esteem and discipline. One of the
unique things about this process is that these kids find role
models who have been where they have been and understand what these
kids are going through. We want these kids to shoot for the stars,
so they don't turn to drugs, alcohol and violence.
Stunts-Ability was founded by R. David Smith, a native San
Diegan. Even though David was born missing the lower part of his
left arm, it never stopped him from becoming stuntman and actor over
24 years ago. Along with some of Hollywood's top stunt coordinators,
David offers professional training courses to all disabled and
able-bodied participants.
Stunts-Ability's goals are to:
- Create a training opportunity for disabled individuals for the
entertainment industry
- Place trained amputee stunt actors in movie and television roles
- Provide an outlet for disabled persons to share experiences and build self esteem
- Change attitudes and public perception about the disabled population
- Help troubled youths get off the streets, out of gangs, and into
responsible lives
Among other accomplishments,
Stunts-Ability has been honored by the California Governor's
Committee. The Executive Director, Catherine Baird wrote, "…no
professional organization in the entertainment industry or the
disabled community has been able to do what Stunts-Ability has been
able to accomplish."
